Let's paint a self portrait - The Pearl Earrings

Painting a self-portrait can be a truly inspiring and transformative experience. As an artist, I've realized that I've never taken the time to capture my own likeness on canvas - until now.
Inspired by the Dutch Golden Age master Johannes Vermeer and his iconic Girl With a Pearl Earring, also known as "Mona Lisa of the North," I decided to embark on this journey of self-discovery through art. As a lover of pearls, I knew I wanted to incorporate these elegant gems into my self-portrait as well, adding a touch of timeless beauty.

The process of painting myself has been both challenging and rewarding. I've had the opportunity to really examine my features, my expressions, and the essence of who I am. It's amazing how the act of rendering oneself on canvas can provide such profound self-reflection.
One of the joys of working in oil paint is the ability to go back and refine, rework, and reimagine different elements of the composition. For example, I initially included some flowers in the background, but ultimately decided to replace them with an old book.
The modern oil painting techniques I've employed have also allowed me to work more efficiently, with faster drying times that enable me to layer colors and textures with ease. I painted the pearl earring last for that reason, the white pops up when the under layer of dark paints are dry.

I have never painted with oil, my father and sister have and at art class one of the students had started in oil but was now using acrylic, I was amazed at her blending techniques, now I see why, oil gives you more time!
